Phaedra´s music blends dark Scandinavian dream pop with psychedelic folk and old soul, creating a melodic and magical musical universe.
The debut album The Sea (Rune Grammofon 2011), received fantastic international reviews in magazines as diverse as The Wire, Uncut, Shindig and Prog. The ethereal, folky universe of the debut made critics draw lines to Vashti Bunyan, Elizabeth Frazer and Nico, while Chicago Reader wrote "this is one of the loveliest, most striking albums, unlike anything I´ve heard in years".
The follow up Blackwinged Night (Rune Grammofon 2015) delves into a darker dream pop underworld, blending the organic sounds of marimba, zither and layers of vocals with orchestrated cascades of woodwinds and strings, analogue synths and deep bass lines. This album also received great international reviews and only 5´ers in Norwegian press, this time associating mid-era Kate Bush, Bjørk and Goldfrapp.
These two albums are the first two in a trilogy; a lyrical and musical cycle with its own mythological structure, and themes of creation and collaps, time and falling stars.
Phaedra is singer, composer and artist Ingvild Langgård, who also composes and performs music for stage and film, as well as sound and video installations. She composed the music for the critically acclaimed and internationally touring performances Night Tripper (2012) and Cosmic Body (2015) with choreographer Ingri Fiksdal and scenographer Signe Becker.
Contributing musicians live and on recordings include percussionist Ane Marthe Sørlien Holen (Ensemble neoN, Pinquins), violinist Gunhild Mathea Olaussen, Jørn Tore Egseth (synthesizers, electronics), woodwinds Kristine Tjøgersen (Asimisimasa, Ensemble neoN) Yumi Murakami (Ensemble Neon), Kari Rønnekleiv (violin) and Ole Henrik Moe (viola).
